Thus, (CH<sub>3</sub>CO)<sub>2</sub>O is called acetic anhydride. Mixed (or unsymmetrical) acid anhydrides, such as <a href="page.php?w=acetic_formic_anhydride">acetic formic anhydride</a> (see below), are known, whereby reaction occurs between two different carboxylic acids.
