on July 17, 1950, and grew up in West Hempstead on Long Island. He is Jewish. As a teenager, he was active in both civil rights and antiwar movements and spent time in southeastern Kentucky as a member of the Encampment for Citizenship. In 1972, he graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a B.A. in history. In 1975, he earned a J.D. from the New York University School of Law.
