<p>Philip Hershkovitz was born on 12 October 1909 in <a href="page.php?w=Pittsburgh">Pittsburgh</a> to Jewish parents Aba and Bertha (Halpern) Hershkovitz. He was the second child and only son among four siblings. He reported that his father died when he was nine years old. After graduating from <a href="page.php?w=Schenley_High_School">Schenley High School</a></p><p>
