Compounds precipitate from a solution when its concentration exceeds its solubility, i.e. the solution is supersaturated. Supersaturation can arise from temperature changes, solvent evaporation, or by mixing solvents. Precipitation occurs more rapidly from a strongly supersaturated solution.
