Etymology

The origin of the name Spey is uncertain. A possible etymological genesis for the name Spey is Early Celtic *skwej-, meaning "thorn". The involvement of a Pictish form of Welsh ysbyddad, meaning "hawthorn", has been suggested, but adjudged unlikely.
