The place is called Suttone atte hone in a charter of 1281 at one time in the <a href="page.php?w=British_Museum">British Museum</a>. The name means 'southern town or settlement near a stone', probably a boundary stone, from the <a href="page.php?w=Old_English">Old English</a> han meaning 'stone'.</p>
