<p>Turcaret is a ruthless, dishonest and dissolute financier.  His vulgar wife is as dissolute as himself.  A harebrained marquis, a knavish chevalier and a coquettish baroness, to whom Turcaret is attracted, are among the other highly comic characters. </p>
