Deterrence is unlike <a href="page.php?w=Coercive_diplomacy">compellence</a>, which is the attempt to get an actor (such as a state) to take an action (i.e. alter the status quo). Both are forms of <a href="page.php?w=Coercion_%28international_relations%29">coercion</a>. Compellence has been characterized as harder to successfully implement than deterrence.</p><p>
