<p>The word papaya derives from the <a href="page.php?w=Arawakan_languages">Arawakan languages</a> of the <a href="page.php?w=West_Indies">West Indies</a>, and is also the name for the plant. It was first used in English around 1600 in reference to the fruit and tree.</p>
