The definition and powers of French counts varied widely. Some counts were nearly independent rulers who gave only nominal loyalty to the <a href="page.php?w=King_of_France">King of France</a>. In Normandy, counts were junior members of the <a href="page.php?w=House_of_Normandy">Norman dynasty</a> with responsibility for guarding border regions.
