In the late 1920s, Oldenburg was involved in a northern German peasants' movement that was sparked by a shortage of capital, poor harvests and falling pork prices. Initially limited to tax boycotts and resistance to forced auctions, it was radicalized by agitators from Schleswig-Holstein, where the movement was centered, and by the Nazi Party,
