His story comes in a number of versions, all of which have him as a tyrannical ruler who demands sacrifice. The myth is part of a wider tradition of serpent- or dragon-kings, such as the <a href="page.php?w=Bel_and_the_Dragon">Babylonian dragon</a>.</p>
