Sin, he argues, consists in contempt of God, and a person who has resolved to commit a wrongful act but is prevented by external circumstances is as culpable as one who carries it out. He identifies eight components of behaviour and rejects mental vices--such as natural inclinations toward certain desires--as morally determining, since these are beyond the individual's control.
