Mechanism

Seizures are the result of neuronal activity in the brain that is abnormal, excessive, and synchronized (also referred to as hypersynchronous). At a cellular level, they are associated with a disruption of the normal balance between excitatory (mainly mediated by the neurotransmitter glutamate) and inhibitory (primarily via the neurotransmitter GABA) neurotransmission.
