Vietnam uses both the North American and European schemes, generally depending on the region. In northern and central Vietnam, including the capital Hanoi, tang refers to any floor, including the ground floor, which is called tang 1. Meanwhile, in southern Vietnam, tret refers to the ground floor and lau refers to any floor above it, starting at lau 1 directly above the ground floor.
