Human-generated particulates are often smaller in size (e.g. PM_2.5 or PM₁), and pose significant threats to human health.

The chemical composition and size of particulates in an aerosol also determine how the aerosol interacts with solar radiation and affects climate. Chemical constituents within an aerosol change its overall refractive index, determining how much light is scattered or absorbed.
