<p>Historically, it also served as a type of shift key, such that one or more following characters were interpreted differently, hence the term <a href="page.php?w=escape_sequence">escape sequence</a>, which refers to a series of characters, usually preceded by the <a href="page.php?w=escape_character">escape character</a>.</p>
