Their <a href="page.php?w=bioluminescent">bioluminescent</a> properties made them valuable to the Japanese during <a href="page.php?w=World_War_II">World War II</a>, when the Japanese army collected large amounts from the ocean to use as a convenient light for reading maps and other papers at night.
