<p>In a triode, <a href="page.php?w=electron">electron</a>s are emitted from a heated cathode by <a href="page.php?w=thermionic_emission">thermionic emission</a>. The emission depends on the work function of the cathode material and its temperature in accordance with <a href="page.php?w=Richardson%27s_law">Richardson's law</a>. In early tubes the filament itself served as the emitter, and this arrangement remains common in transmitting tubes. In most receiving tubes the cathode is indirectly heated</p><p>
