<p>In 1867,  <a href="page.php?w=Stephen_Wilcox">Stephen Wilcox</a>, Jr. and his partner <a href="page.php?w=George_Herman_Babcock">George Herman Babcock</a>, of Providence, Rhode Island, patented their so-called safety boiler ("Improvements in Steam Generators", U.S. Patent No. 65,042).
