In 1769, Richard Arkwright patented a <a href="page.php?w=water_frame">water frame</a>  to use the extra power of a <a href="page.php?w=water_mill">water mill</a> after he had set up a horse-powered mill in <a href="page.php?w=Nottingham">Nottingham</a>.</p>
