Though the college initially admitted only students who belonged to the Religious Society of Friends, Earlham began admitting non-Quakers in 1865. The college was named for <a href="page.php?w=Earlham_Hall">Earlham Hall</a>, home of the <a href="page.php?w=Joseph_John_Gurney">Gurneys</a>, an important English Quaker family.</p>
