<p>Recessed niches were characteristic of Mesopotamian Temple architecture, and were adopted in Egyptian architecture, especially for the design of <a href="page.php?w=Mastaba">Mastaba</a> tombs, during the <a href="page.php?w=First_Dynasty_of_Egypt">First Dynasty</a> and the <a href="page.php?w=Second_Dynasty_of_Egypt">Second Dynasty</a>, from the time of the <a href="page.php?w=Naqada_III">Naqada III</a> period (circa 3000 BCE).
