<p>The concept is derived from <a href="page.php?w=Shakespeare">Shakespeare</a>'s phrase "There is a tide in the affairs of men / Which, taken at the flood, leads on to fortune". Ruskin believed that the letters were inspired by the Third Fors: that he was striking out at the right moment to influence social change.</p>
