<p><big>Origins and classification</big></p>
<p>The Gupta script was descended from the Ashokan <a href="page.php?w=Brahmi_script">Brahmi script</a>, and is a crucial link between Brahmi and most other <a href="page.php?w=Brahmic_scripts">Brahmic scripts</a>, a family of alphasyllabaries or <a href="page.php?w=abugida">abugida</a>s.
