The name Mablethorpe derives from the Old Norse malbertþorp meaning 'Malbert's secondary settlement'.

Mablethorpe has existed as a town for many centuries, gaining its market town charter in 1253. Coastal erosion means some of it was lost to the sea in the 1540s.
