<p>One account in the history of a small town in western France reports how the terminology was undergoing a change there at the beginning of the  century. At that time, one could refer indistinguishably either to the "<i>archer</i> of the provost" or "<i>archer</i> of the <i>maréchaussée</i>" for example, but by 1720 invariably the latter expression was used.</p>
