<p><big>Early life</big></p>
<p>Howard was born on 29 November 1922 in <a href="page.php?w=Brompton%2C_London">Brompton, London</a>, the youngest son of Geoffrey Howard and Edith . His mother was the daughter of Jewish immigrants from Germany, who later converted to Christianity. His father was the chairman of a manufacturing company. Howard was educated at <a href="page.php?w=Wellington_College%2C_Berkshire">Wellington College</a> and <a href="page.php?w=Christ_Church%2C_Oxford">Christ Church, Oxford</a>.</p><p>
