The first reliable <a href="page.php?w=repeating_rifle">repeating rifle</a>s, the 1860 <a href="page.php?w=Henry_rifle">Henry rifle</a> and its 1866 descendant the <a href="page.php?w=Winchester_rifle">Winchester rifle</a>, superseded muskets entirely. Repeating rifles quickly established themselves as the standard for rifle design, ending the era of the musket.</p>
