It remained the largest and most influential body in wrestling until the mid-1980s by which time most of the original member promotions went out of business as a result of the World Wrestling Federation's national expansion. The WWF had been the NWA's Northeastern territory but left the alliance in 1983 ahead of the expansion.

In September 1993, the largest remaining member promotion, World Championship Wrestling
