<p>Large synchrotrons usually have a <a href="page.php?w=linear_accelerator">linear accelerator</a> (linac) to give the particles an initial acceleration, and a lower energy synchrotron which is sometimes called a booster to increase the energy of the particles before they are injected into the high energy synchrotron ring.
