The modern agricultural sense of the word stems from the same origin, in that  a medieval land-"holder" (no-one "owned" land but the king himself under his <a href="page.php?w=allodial">allodial</a> title) under <a href="page.php?w=feudal_land_tenure">feudal land tenure</a></p><p>
