History

A little over to the north-west at Castle Hill are the earthwork remains of a medieval motte and bailey castle. Uppingham became a market town in 1281 when the lord of the manor was given the right to hold a weekly market.

The town has two active churches; The Church of St Peter and St Paul, a largely 14th-century Church of England parish church
