He graduated from Tyler Junior College and taught English at the college. In 1966, Jennings earned his B.A. from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas; he earned a master's degree the following year and taught English there. He taught at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire for three years, then moved to Nashville, Tennessee,
