<p><big>Etymology</big></p>
<p>Windlesora is first mentioned in the <a href="page.php?w=Anglo-Saxon_Chronicle">Anglo-Saxon Chronicle</a>. (The settlement had an earlier name but this is unknown.) The name has no exact etymology, but the closest estimation is that derives from <a href="page.php?w=old_English">old English</a> Windles-ore or winch by the riverside. This etymology is shared with <a href="page.php?w=Winsor%2C_Hampshire">Winsor</a> in Hampshire and also Broadwindsor</p><p>
