Occurrence and synthesis

Coronene occurs naturally as the very rare mineral carpathite, characterized by flakes of pure coronene embedded in sedimentary rock. This mineral may be created from ancient hydrothermal vent activity. In earlier times this mineral was also called karpatite or pendletonite.
