<p>first appeared in 1949, part of <a href="page.php?w=Morris_Kharasch">Kharasch</a>'s studies on peroxide effects.  Because <a href="page.php?w=chain_transfer">chain transfer</a> occurs very slowly, the radical reaction required a very large excess of aldehyde and, with dicarbonyl substrates, decarbonylation byproducts appeared in large quantity.</p>
