The Old English noun and associated verb impian appear to come from an unattested <a href="page.php?w=Late_Latin">Late Latin</a> term *emputa (impotus is attested in the <a href="page.php?w=Salic_law">Salic law</a>), the neuter plural of   'natural, implanted, grafted'.</p>
