The word's primary origin is the <a href="page.php?w=Proto-Indo-European_language">Proto-Indo-European</a> stem <i>leg<sup>wh</sup>-</i>, meaning "light", "easy", or "nimble", among other things. The  PIE stem also gave rise to the English-language antonym of "heavy", "light".</p><p>
