(phos), meaning "light," and ????? (graphê), meaning "drawing, writing," together meaning "drawing with light."

The word can refer either to the physical print--like a lithograph, serigraph, or photograph--or to the event itself, as in "she took a photograph", even before the image has been printed or viewed.

History

The first permanent photograph, a contact-exposed copy of an engraving, was made in 1822 using the bitumen-based "heliography"
