The term can be used as an adverb, adjective, or noun. The <a href="page.php?w=Oxford_English_Dictionary">Oxford English Dictionary</a> traces the earliest known use in print to 1825. The phrase "down-easter", meaning a person from "Downeast", appeared in print in 1828.</p>
