<p>In the United States, the <a href="page.php?w=Code_of_Federal_Regulations">Code of Federal Regulations</a> (9 CFR 1.1), says that the term pet animal means "any animal that has commonly been kept as a pet in family households in the US, such as dogs, cats, guinea pigs, rabbits, and hamsters", and further says that (emphasis added) "This term excludes exotic animals and wild animals." It defines exotic animal, in part, as "[An animal] that is native to a foreign country or of foreign origin</p><p>
