After the death of Theodosius I in 395 AD, the Roman Empire split into the Western and the Eastern Roman Empire (known historiographically as the Byzantine Empire), the latter of which had a thriving Greco-Roman culture.

Greeks still see the Roman period of occupation as a negative period between the city state period and the Eastern Roman Empire.
