Thereafter, the head of the area was styled "Governor" rather than "President" and became subordinate to the <a href="page.php?w=Governor-General_of_India">viceroy</a> in <a href="page.php?w=Calcutta">Calcutta</a>, with Madras' titulature that would persist until 1950.
