<p>The genus Icterus was introduced by the French zoologist <a href="page.php?w=Mathurin_Jacques_Brisson">Mathurin Jacques Brisson</a> in 1760 with the <a href="page.php?w=Venezuelan_troupial">Venezuelan troupial</a> as the <a href="page.php?w=type_species">type species</a>. The name is the Latin word for a yellow bird, probably the <a href="page.php?w=Eurasian_golden_oriole">Eurasian golden oriole</a>.</p>
