<p>English and genus names come through French phalarope and scientific <a href="page.php?w=Latin">Latin</a> Phalaropus from <a href="page.php?w=Ancient_Greek">Ancient Greek</a> ??????? (phalarís), meaning "coot", and ???? (poús), meaning "foot". Coots and phalaropes both have lobed toes.</p>

<p>The genus contains three species:</p>
