<p>In humans and most mammals, the Y chromosome is visibly smaller in size than the X chromosome, a condition known as heteromorphic sex chromosomes. Likewise in birds, the W chromosome is often visibly smaller than the Z chromosome. In contrast, it is nearly impossible to visually differentiate between the sex chromosomes of amphibians and some reptiles; as a result, these sex chromosome pairs are said to be homomorphic.</p>
