Old St Chad's on the earlier site

The present building replaced an earlier church, dedicated to St Chad, situated near College Hill.

It was already a well endowed and ancient institution at the time of the Domesday Book of 1086. The ancient parish included the greater part of Shrewsbury within the walls, and it had a number
