The chip was designed for the 'Spelling Bee' project at <a href="page.php?w=Texas_Instruments">TI</a>, which later became the <a href="page.php?w=Speak_%26_Spell_%28toy%29">Speak & Spell</a>. A speech-less 'Spelling B' was released at the same time as the <a href="page.php?w=Speak_%26_Spell_%28toy%29">Speak & Spell</a>.</p>
