<p>of the 1960s, the government promoted TCM as inexpensive and popular. This was largely spearheaded by <a href="page.php?w=Mao_Zedong">Mao Zedong</a>, despite the fact that, according to <a href="page.php?w=The_Private_Life_of_Chairman_Mao">The Private Life of Chairman Mao</a>, he did not believe in its effectiveness.  After the opening of relations between the United States and China after 1972, there was great interest in the West for what is now called traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).</p>
